Create and edit sequences
When you have at least one scene containing cameras, you can start to edit your movie in the sequence editor.
PocketStudio’s sequence editor is very similar to any conventional non-linear video editing software (such as Adobe Premiere, Adobe Rush, iMovie, Avid Media Composer, etc.) but rather than assembling video shots in sequences you will be cutting ‘live’ 3D scenes instead.
With conventional video editing tools, the task of editing consists of adding, trimming, splitting, duplicating, arranging etc. video shots in a timeline. In PocketStudio, instead of video or images files, you work with “live” 3D scenes. You will have the ability, for each shot in the Timeline, to choose the camera from which the scene will be rendered live to the preview monitor.
Adding shots to the Timeline
To add a 3D scene to the timeline, drag and drop a scene card from the Media Browser panel to the timeline panel. The result is a shot with an editable start and end point.
A scene must contain at least one camera to be added to the Timeline.
You can add shots at the end of a sequence, or insert them anywhere in the Timeline. Just drag and drop the scene between two shots and release to place it.
If the shot appears too big or too small in the Timeline, you can zoom in and out on the Timeline using either the mouse wheel while having the cursor in the Timeline’s panel or using the Zoom slider located in the upper right corner of the Timeline’s panel.
Changing a shot’s camera
Each shot on the timeline represents a 3D scene rendered from a particular camera. One you drop a scene on the timeline, the first camera from the scene is used by default to render the scene in the Preview Monitor. To change this camera, click on the shot in the Timeline. A popover will show up above the shot with a list of all cameras contained in the scene. Click on the thumbnail of the camera you would like to use for that shot.
In PocketStudio’s terminology a sequence is made of shots. A shot is defined by it’s in and out points, a scene and a camera from which the scene is rendered from.
Trimming a shot
To trim a shot (to change its in and out points) do as follows:
- Select the shot in the Timeline by clicking on it.
- With the shot highlighted, move the left or right side of shot to adjust its length. As you trim the shot, the in or out point of the shot that are displayed on either side of the shot, are updated.
Adjusting the in and out points for action or temporal continuity: if you have two shots representing the same scene rendered from two different camera angles for instance and want to insure temporal continuity, the in point of the second shot will have to be set to the out point of the first shot plus 1 frame.
Sequence playback and navigation
- Click on the Timeline to set the playhead position.
- Use the arrow keys ← or → to snap the playhead from shot to shot.
- When the mouse hovers over the Timeline panel, a “ghost” playhead appears under the mouse. This behavior allows you to quickly skim through the sequence without changing the playhead’s position.
To play the sequence back you can:
- Click on located below the preview monitor.
- Hit the space bar to switch between play and pause.
The rendering engine will do its best to play the sequence in real-time at constant framerate. This framerate can be changed in the project global settings (default is 30 fps).
Rearranging and deleting shots
You can change the order of the shots by dragging them around in the Timeline.
To delete a shot select the shot in the Timeline to delete, then click on theicon located in the upper right corner of the Timeline.
- Other tools such as the razor tool, tools to replace shots, move shots in the Timeline etc. are not yet available.
- You cannot select multiple shots at once.
- The Timeline has one track only.
- There is no audio track.
- shots cannot be renamed.
- It is not possible to enter values for the in and out points.
- It is not possible to use still images or videos.
- There is no support for titles, cards and transitions.
- Sequence data cannot be exported.
